Commissioned Pectoral Chi Rho Cross

A family member recently became an ordained minister and he sent me a message a bout commissioning a piece that he can wear over his robes… After much thought and deliberation I decided to tackle the project to see what I could come up with. I am extremely proud of him. He is open minded, kind and accepting of people from all walks of life. He is well educated and I love watching his bible talks and teachings.

For this project I went heavy with symbolism. Anyone who knows about Jesus knows that he was a carpenter.. and also that he died on a wooden cross to “purify” our sins. So I went with what I knew best, and honestly one of my favorite woods ever. Palo Santo. We happened to have some bigger pieces at the shop that I work at was happy to find the a piece that vibed with what I was trying to do.

I sketched out the cross on the wood then went to carving. It seriously smelled SOOOO good. I REALLY LOVE WORKING WITH PALO SANTO.

Once I carved out the root of the image I wood burned the details and the alpha & omega symbol. This part also smelled amazing.

I decided to leave the wood unfinished to allow the natural aroma of the wood to shine and polished it with a small polishing wheel to bring forward the natural resin of the wood.

The piece turned out primitive, rustic, and amazing. I was very happy with this piece and so was it’s new owner!
